I am here on iBranch after what I consider a very long hiatus. There were few very wonderful posts, and this post of mine is in response to Vineeta Mam' post on the possible reasons of brawls among boys, which I consider a global phenomenon with regional colors.
What makes human different from other animals? What differentiate a better or an evolved human being from lesser one? Or are we all just same. After all if you see a dog's genetic make up and that of human, then the homology is as high as 85%. Any one of you would be happy if you score that much in your semester exams! (though they are not comparable). Still, I reckon 85% is really very high, and similarity between a Chimp and human is as high as 98-99%. Ants, I consider are more social than us, at least they do not have genocides in their colonies. So why are we at the top of food chain?
Well, each person can have a different perspective, and we should respect each one, thats what democracy is all about.
As far as I am concerned, I think its something very fundamental...and probably there is need of realizing that difference, so as to reach towards higher social and psychological parity. According to me it zeroes down to...questions. Yes, human race from the very beginning has asked questions, and the quality of those questions determined our way. Whole natural process of selection revolves around the general question whose answers a species strive to find. I can cover an entire post on how questions have decided our course (as a species), but that would be digressing in a big way. Hence, I only want to keep the above few statements in mind before reading my post further.
I totally disagree that phenomenon of settling things via violent action is something very specific and pertains to our college or just to our nation. I do not agree that IITians are any different, any one who know about their inter hostel politics would agree with me, but yes there can be difference in expressing difference. Let me warn you, if you want to call me a cynic, after reading next few line, then you are welcomed, but call me a global one, because I see this world in same light. We are animals, and we should respect our savage instincts as they have served us well over thousands of years in our survival, and therefore I dont see an end to beating, bashing and brawls anytime soon in coming thousands of years. We had last world war only some 65 years ago...and on evolutionary scale thats not even a mm.
So, can we have no solution, is there no light at the end of tunnel, are we destined to find solutions using glory of fist? Well Mr. Gandhi proved otherwise, but we might not have luxury of another Gandhi.
I look it differently...I look it like a dog trainer.
Rottwiler is one the fiercest dog breeds, and their activity level is too high. Worst thing you can offer to a rottwiler is offering him nothing. Leaving it to itself, and I bet, a rottwiler of calmest pedigree would become a rowdy one if offered nothing to work upon. So, a trainer would always keep a rottwiler busy, make him run hard, train harder (a piece of advice: Never buy a rottwiler if you live in a small home, or can not take it for long walks) and have strict regiment, and the result would be a perfectly trained dog, who will guard in fiercest way and seek love in most cherubic manner.
Offer a belligerent person something to fight for before he finds something wrong on its own, it is as simple as that.
IITians have their hostels, their inter hostel rivalry is something to see.
Even Ivy League in US have Greek clubs, where rivalry runs for ages.
Do our boys have something to fight for, besides some silly, idiotic groupings on the basis of regions in city, like some cabal tradition which have its roots in, when man used to take shelter in caves, or in some way like dogs who pee to mark their territory. Its time, when we should give our boys something worth fighting for (even girls can join). Let their savage instincts flourish, but in a systematic manner. Let there be a sport coach, a sporting facility where we can tire the rowdiest ROTTWILER.
I can be as wrong as you can be right. So, this debate remains as open as it was before. Lets ask questions to ourselves, to others, and to this society so that we can evolve. Let me tell you, society which asked more question was always on cradle of success, whether it be India historically or US in present era. Try answer every question, because there is no better source of adrenaline rush you will get if you answer such questions. High which one gets after a moral victory takes you to bigger ecstasy than testosteronic high after clobbering someone...its bloody scientific fact.
Welcoming Questions.
