Skill development has taken backseat: Knowledge Comm Skill development in engineering education has taken a backseat, leading to a dearth of expert manpower in the sector and aggravating the situation by the mushrooming private institutes, a National Knowledge Commission panel has said. "Currently, most graduates do not possess the skills needed to compete in the global economy, and industries have been facing a consistent skills deficit," the Working Group on Engineering Education said in its recent report. The Group headed by M S Ananth, Director of IIT-Madras, submitted its alarming report to the National Knowledge Commission. The number of institutions have grown manifold in the last two decades, mostly in the private sector, it said adding that "this rapid expansion has raised serious concerns about the quality of engineering education in these institutions."
