I think it is wonderful that the iBranch people have created a public psace where we can all interact.
And its very encouraging to see the Vice Chancellor himself being accessible and wanting to listen to
the voice of the student community.
And I have been thinking.. we should have actual physical places too where we can all interact.
Just a thought. Maybe the space around the parking space and the canteen and the courtyard.
Exciting stimulating place where atleast ten things are going on.
I think our university is uniquely poised to be an exciting, stimulating twenty first century institution.
A place where " a thousand flowers bloom and a hundred streams of thought contend."
Art, music, debates, discussions, technological creativity.
A place where you can look back to when you are much older and say
"Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive
To be young was very heaven"

"It will be necessary for us Indians -- Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Jews, Parsis and all others to whom India is their home -- to recognise a common flag to live and die for."
-- Mahatma Gandhi
July 22, 1947. As he moved the motion on the adoption of the national flag in independent India's Constituent Assembly, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru hoped the flag would carry a message of freedom wherever it flew.
Other voices joined him. Sarojini Naidu said: "Under this flag, there is no prince and there is no peasant, no rich and no poor. There is only duty, responsibility and sacrifice."
Freedom fighter Muniswami Pillai added that the flag did not belong to the rich or the wealthy, but to the depressed, oppressed and submerged classes.
Inspiring words.
Unfortunately, as time passed, the use of the Indian flag became limited to a privileged few. Only VVIPs, government offices and public sector undertakings were allowed the honour of displaying the flag on their premises. The rest of India could fly the Tricolour only on Independence Day, Republic Day and Mahatma Gandhi's birthday. ...

I read a comment on a blog at this site about an intellectual
section in college and how they lack a platform.
And i saw some students making a film one day and would love
to get in touch with them to learn a little about the process.
So there is an aware, active group out there somewhere and it would
be nice if you got together, regardless of bramch or year and maybe
"make some noise', do something new and exciting.
BUT AFTER the exams ofcourse.
I have met students who perform at rock shows.
And students who sing on radio.
And so many who play cricket or football.
One who plays the "Congo"? The college is full of fresh young talent.
But youth should also be about making platforms. Not waiting for them to magically appear.
And if you want help from faculty and administration, it will come.
BUT you have to be there in classes... even after the lunch break.
Study hard, Perform well. Live upto the hopes of your...

The party was over officially. The chief guest & the teachers had left. She sat there in one corner of the room,on a comfy chair at a place where she could feel the cool freeze from one of the coolers brushing her cheeks. She had not eaten anything since the morning. She always did that;before her exam, before an interview or before a programme that she had to host, she just couldn't eat.Today was no different.
She had gotten up at 7 in the morning and had hardly stopped since then.Decorating the hall and pleading(or rather persuading) the boys to stand up on the stool kept on a chair to reach the ceiling, telling evrybody the order in which they had to give their performances, making sure that somebody would take care of the refreshments, distribution of the flowers, making of posters, keeping in tune with her co-host,she felt like it was too much for her to handle !
The party had been successful.Everybody was now enjoying themselves. Some of them were...

Most of you have passed the forbidding structure just a short distance away from
us.The fortress with the large walls.
Would you like to visit the jail?
I am serious.
I went once and met the female prisoners.
And contrary to expectations they seem human, like all of us.
And there are children who have followed their mothers into jail because there is
nobody outside to look after them.
So in a way they are prisoners too.
And I thought about it. Just the experience of being shut away from the world.
waiting for a trial.
Being forgotten or abandoned by your family inside.
What if you were innocent?
But did not have the money for legal help?
And what happens when you leave jail?
Who will employ you? marry you?
Even though the term of imprisonment is over, you are never really out of jail.
Just a few stray thoughts.
The jailer says he has grants and would welcome engineering students working on projects there. ...

Today we had an extempore debate competition and very good
participation.
Infact too good!
The problem is when you compete against more people there is a chance that you may not win.
And this can be heart breaking.
And i can go hoarse saying participation matters not winning or losing.
And you won't believe me!
I believe if you learn something and keep getting exposure to good speakers you are
bound to grow into a good speaker.
So please do not lose heart!

Welcome to the first blog on this site.
This is a blog devoted to helping you with spoken English
but is also meant to start a conversation between us.
For too long teaching has been presentation..of facts, insights, perspectives/
I would like to turn that into a conversation.
Hence the title Lets talk.
Today I will just give you one formula for improving English.
Its called the Input------------------------------------------------------------Output formula.
You improve and enhance and increase your input hundred times/
And your output is bound to increase!
What this means is that if you read magazines, watch television and converse with friends in English,
a hundred times more than you do today...by next year you will be reasonably fluent.
There are no short cuts...you only learn to speak English by SPEAKING ENGLISH!
So get started today. read aloud. Gossip in English. Tape record yourself.
Volunteer to...
