This was my reply to Aman Konark Modi's post on ragging, you can read it in comments section of his blog (if and after he approves my comment). You can read his blog post here. and my reply...below.
Its deja vu, and yet I am surprised. On very first note, you are justifying a criminal offense, and on other you posses few very archaic views about social development of student in particular, which are far away from normal psychological and scientific views. I dont know your definition of ragging, but what it seems that you have very lenient one for it.
Lets stick to the definition of ragging and do not take it as development tool, and when i am going to talk about ragging then i would be talking it in general and would not remain specific to our college.
I really dont get the sense of 'development' if someone is put in seminude condition and made to some cross sexual lewd moves for(pleasure of) some wonderful seniors. (refer MANIT case).
I really do not get sense of unity and standing for all when you talk of that when I see brawls by student.
I dont see sense of achievement when after a year of ragging one boasts of drinking 10 straight shots of Vodka.
I dont see boldness in shouting in highest pitch in pitch black night after 12.
Violence and atrocities of any kind can never be justified even if such an act involves acceptance from both the sides. Can rape be justified for very same reasons?
Ragging is no tool for development or opening up of psyche of students, there are other tools which for sure do not have any side effects, you can not justify taking cocaine if you do not have food to eat so you can not justify ragging in absence of proper 'personal development' faculty system(mind you; we have few very wonderful faculties for the same, but not the perfect system).
See in 'my personal views' if you do not take GD/seminar classes sincerely and do not want to make innovative presentation or present it with full jest then you better point finger at the closest mirror nearby you.
If you are talking of love, affection and brother hood by seniors then its not ragging but a social culture and it does not need ragging sessions. And if you are telling that after getting slapped 100 times you will become strong, buddy that's the way terrorists are made. Seniors in every culture have a role to play, and if any such role involves developing juniors then it is better if done with love and with proper intentions.
If you meant the same ; the love and affection thing, then kindly don not term it as ragging but use 'interaction' for it.
There is no shortcut for sustainable development, and ragging by no means is a tool for development.
last thing: Kindly do not repay those 100 slaps to fellow commuter at the bus stop, who knows if he had received 200 slaps while he was ragged.
All views are personal and would be appreciated if they become social. Heated comments are invited.
